X-ray absorption measurements of low-Z elements (Z < 20) are feasible
when performed under a He atmosphere. We describe a sample shuttle for
use with a popular fluorescence detector that maintains a stable He-p
urged atmosphere and allows rapid exchange of samples with reproducibl
e positioning. No waiting time is needed following sample exchange and
fluorescence intensity variations due to sample chamber gas compositi
on changes are minimized. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
