Active combustion instability control through modulated liquid fuel in
jection is investigated. The flame response to external excitation is
determined by phase-locked radical emission imaging. A fuel oil spray
flame is destabilized by a controlled external acoustic excitation. Th
e actuator is used to modulate the liquid fuel spray, imposing a phase
shift between the pressure and heat release fluctuations. This system
can efficiently control the level of hear release oscillations in the
combustion zone and the corresponding pressure fluctuations.
