Abstract
Fifty years of cruise technology development were studied. The present driving environment is too noisy which imposes great demands on the p resent cruise technology. Today's cruise technology puts emphasis on d riving safety by introducing a minimum safe distance for safe control actions (breaking, accelerating, etc.). Two control methods were used in the past which are compared and investigated: classical control and fuzzy logic control. This review clearly indicates that the later met hod is taking over due to its ability to handle cruise problems which are too noisy and difficult to model. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
