T. Alboussiere et al., SEGREGATION DURING HORIZONTAL BRIDGMAN GROWTH UNDER AN AXIAL MAGNETIC-FIELD, Journal of crystal growth, 181(1-2), 1997, pp. 133-144
Solute segregation in a dilute metallic alloy is investigated during h
orizontal Bridgman growth. Experiments have been carried out under a p
ermanent uniform axial magnetic field of intensity up to 1.35 T. The h
eld is seen to have a moderate effect on axial segregation. A 2D model
for segregation is presented and solved both numerically and in terms
of order of magnitude analysis. Accounting for the measurement errors
and the 2D nature of the analysis, a good agreement is obtained with
the experimental results. The theoretical analyses exhibit a critical
value for the magnetic held intensity. Below, the magnetic field has n
o effect on solute segregation, while above, the effective partition r
atio is increasing with increasing magnetic field intensity.
