In a marine application a two-cylinder configuration was used that cre
ated a bistable jet in the gap between the two cylinders. A literature
search was performed to gain an understanding of the unsteady fluid d
ynamics leading to the observed violent structural response to this fl
ow phenomenon. As no satisfactory explanation could be found in the av
ailable literature, a study was performed. It showed that such fluidel
astic instability could result from the coupling between flow separati
on and the motion of the tandem-cylinder configuration generated by mo
ving-wall effects.
