A recent literature search has shown that there is a need for a common
categorisation of types of management support systems (MSS)-for resea
rchers, practitioners, and teachers. The theme throughout the classifi
cation is that the important differentiators of systems should be thos
e that reflect the behavioural and organisational aspects of system sp
ecification, development, implementation, and use. This paper contains
a proposal for a nine-dimensional classification: cognitive, informat
ion engineering, knowledge type and source, knowledge engineering, org
anizational, political, process, support, and technological. Both indi
vidual and group MSS are considered. Previous classifications of MSS a
re reviewed.
