The chemical preparation and the determination of the crystal structur
e of a new organic cation cyclohexaphosphate, hexa(phenylammonium) cyc
lohexaphosphate hexahydrate, (C6H5NH3)(6)P6O18. 6H(2)O, is given. This
new compound is triclinic, P (1) over bar, with the following unit ce
ll parameters:a=12.353(8) Angstrom, b=11.944(8) Angstrom, c=10.154(5)
Angstrom, alpha=114.91(5)degrees, beta=110.82(5)degrees, gamma=79.04(5
)degrees, Z=2, V=1269(3) Angstrom(3), and Dx=3.00 Mg m(-3). The crysta
l structure was solved by using 4578 independent reflections with a fi
nal R value of 0.042. The P6O18 ring is centrosymmetrical. Its main ge
ometrical features are those commonly observed in the atomic arrangeme
nts of cyclohexaphosphate. Phenylammonium groups and water molecules t
hrough II-bonds perform the three-dimensional cohesion of this simple
atomic arrangement. The hydrogen bond scheme is given.
