Abstract
A periodic bond chain (PBC) analysis of the topaz [Al2SiO4(F,OH)(2)] s tructure reveals six unique PBCs: [001], [110], [100], [101], [111], a nd [211]. From these, several crystal forms were predicted to be impor tant: {110}, {001}, {011}, {111}, {112}, {120}, {113}, {231}, {010}, a nd {101}. Forms observed in natural crystals agree well with those pre dicted. In addition, surface microtopography, such as striations and p olygonized spiral-growth hillocks, shows linear features that coincide with PBC directions.
