The presentation of the elderly in undergraduate textbooks on marriage
and family is studied by a content analysis of 27 texts published fro
m 1988 to 1993. The aged receive limited amounts of coverage, are ofte
n separated from other family issues and events, and are generally ass
ociated with specific ''elderly'' topics in these texts. Photographs d
epict elderly persons engaging in varied activities but show little di
versity of race, class, or gender. Implications and strategies for mor
e fully integrated presentations of the elderly are discussed.
