The density changes during melting and the thermal expansion coefficie
nts of the LiF YF3, and LiYF4 melts were measured over a wide temperat
ure range (from the melting point to 1300-2300 K) by exposing samples
to a narrow gamma-ray beam. The melting of yttrium fluoride is accompa
nied by extremely small volume changes, indicative that the melt and t
he crystal differ very little in short-range order.
