Abstract
The paper reviews some of the competing explanations for the rising le vels of earnings inequality in Britain, such as skill shortages, risin g unemployment, globalization, demographic factors and inflation. Thes e explanations are rejected in favour of the idea that it was the majo r changes in the institutional pay-setting arrangements that were larg ely responsible for rising inequality. Union density figures and strik e data are explored in support of this thesis.
