M. Fredericks et Si. Miller, TRUTH IN PACKAGING - TEACHING CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS TO UNDERGRADUATES IN THE HUMAN-SCIENCES, Teaching sociology, 21(2), 1993, pp. 160-165
This article explores the issue of introducing controversial topics to
undergraduate students in the human sciences, especially if such topi
cs may raise contradictory views in terms of the ''core'' concepts of
the discipline. Though such issues may be left for advanced courses, t
he matter of not introducing them may raise potential ethical concerns
for the instructor This paper argues that controversial topics, given
students' backgrounds, ought to be taught in beginning courses. Howev
er, students should also be taught how to take a critical attitude tow
ard such topics. This task can be accomplished by introducing them to
a simplified version of Popper's falsificationist theory.
