In assessing the range and penetration of recent organizational schola
rship, Stern and Barley give too much attention and weight to work tha
t appears in the core organizational journals and not enough to work r
eported in broader social science journals, in journals devoted to spe
cialized arenas such as education and medical care, and to the book li
terature. A survey of this broader domain suggests that organizational
researchers continue to honor Weber's legacy and to explore the impac
t of societies on organizations and of organizational structures and p
rocesses on the functioning of societies..
