Jr. Blau, ORGANIZATIONS AS OVERLAPPING JURISDICTIONS - RESTORING REASON IN ORGANIZATIONAL ACCOUNTS, Administrative science quarterly, 41(1), 1996, pp. 172-179
As Stern and Barley suggest, what is social about organizations is cur
rently undertheorized given the aspatial character of administration a
nd financing, reliance on external labor markets, and the global chara
cter of production and distribution. Nevertheless, organizations are s
ocial entities and deal with social accounts that accompany and supple
ment their legal responsibilities and rights. The concept of ''jurisdi
ctions'' provides a framework for considering organizations' social ch
aracter in the context of the contemporary economy, while relying on i
nsights from classical theorists..
