W. Stewart et J. Barling, FATHERS WORK EXPERIENCES EFFECT CHILDRENS BEHAVIORS VIA JOB-RELATED AFFECT AND PARENTING BEHAVIORS, Journal of organizational behavior, 17(3), 1996, pp. 221-232
We suggest that fathers' work experiences (decision latitude, job dema
nds, job insecurity and interrole conflict) indirectly influence child
ren's behaviors (acting out, shyness and school competence) through th
eir sequential effects on job-related affect (job satisfaction, negati
ve job-related mood and job tension) and parenting behaviors (punishin
g, rejecting and authoritative behaviors). Data on work experiences, j
ob-related affect and parenting behaviors were obtained from 189 fathe
rs; teachers provided ratings of the children's behaviors. Path analys
is provided support for the proposed model. Conceptual implications an
d suggestions for future research on fathers' employment and the links
between work and family are discussed.
