Abstract
The effect of multicomponent etchants on Bi12GeO20 and Bi12SiO20 singl e-crystal surfaces was studied. Diffusion-controlled congruent dissolu tion was shown to be necessary to ensure a high surface finish. HCl-ba sed etchants were found to produce the best polishing effect. The thic kness of the deformed surface layer was determined.
