Fifty-three cultivated food plants and 38 species of edible wild fruit
s and leafy vegetables were identified during the course of ethnobotan
ical interviews with 51 informants of Musoma and Tarime Districts, Mar
a Region, Tanzania, and an accompanying dietary survey of Tarime Distr
ict. An additional 35 potentially edible species of fruits, leafy vege
tables and underground plant portions were identified by searching the
East Africa Herbarium, Nairobi, for specimens from Mara Region of spe
cies known to be used as food in neighbouring areas of East Africa.
