Mn. Zaid, MORE FRAGMENTATION - UNFINISHED BUSINESS IN LINKING THE SOCIAL-SCIENCES AND THE HUMANITIES, Administrative science quarterly, 41(2), 1996, pp. 251-261
Although administrative science (organizational studies) has made much
progress since the founding of ASQ, it continues to be a fragmented f
ield of study. This essay explores one source of the continuing and po
ssibly increasing fragmentation of administrative science-the extensiv
e but partial rapprochement with the humanities that has occurred in r
ecent decades. I argue that the opening to the humanities is useful be
cause it helps us understand processes and phenomena that are not well
explored in more traditional modes, but the opening is still incomple
te. It has taken place most fully in research using deconstructive, rh
etorical, and narrative analysis growing out of literary theory, and t
here has been some engagement with history and historical analysis. Th
e connection to the traditional topics of philosophy have been most di
sjointed. An agenda for further research is suggested.
