Abstract
The influence of carbon stoichiometry and synthesis conditions on the composition and structure of silicon carbide was studied. Synthesis un der highly nonequilibrium conditions was shown to yield significantly carbon-rich silicon carbide crystals. Sintering of carbon-rich SiC pow ders is accompanied by the formation of a finely dispersed diamond pha se, which strongly affects the physical properties of polycrystalline silicon carbide.
