Abstract
The optical absorption, circular dichroism (CD), and optical rotation spectra of undoped and Mn-doped Bi12TiO20 crystals were investigated i n the visible and near-IR spectral ranges. The absorption and CD bands were identified under the assumption that the [MnO4](n-) complexes ha ve T-d symmetry. Vacuum annealing reduces the Mn4+ ion in Bi12TiO20[Mn ] to Mn2+; subsequent annealing in an oxidizing medium causes the reve rse transition.
