Single crystals of the low-temperature (beta) phase of BaB2O4 have bee
n grown by the Czochralski method using a Pt tube as a seed. A beta-ph
ase polycrystal was formed inside the Pt tube at first, but a single c
rystal formed subsequently. After the growth in the Pr tube, a single-
crystal boule could be grown continuously by the usual Czochralski met
hod. In addition, a single crystal could be grown along a particular c
rystallographic direction when a beta-phase single-crystal seed was mo
unted inside the Pt tube and the beta-alpha phase transformation was p
revented before seeding.
