For the first time, the difference between the thermal parameters of m
etal and nonmetal ions has been positively established by high-resolut
ion neutron diffraction measurements on a powder sample of TiN. Measur
ements were made on a double- as well as triple-axis neutron spectrome
ter. The data were analysed by the Rietveld method. The refined occupa
ncy factor indicated a chemical composition of TiN0.95(1). The values
of the individual temperature factors were B-Ti = 0.209 (13) Angstrom(
2) and BN = 0.271 (7) Angstrom(2). The results of the present investig
ation are compared with the values obtained by X-ray and neutron diffr
action techniques.
