This article provides an overview of the the evaluation strategy being
used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monit
or and improve a broad national program of HIV prevention among in-sch
ool youth. Selected findings from each of the evaluation components ar
e presented. The evaluation strategy includes national, state, and foc
al surveillance of risk behaviors, health outcomes, and school HIV-rel
ated policies and programs. Additionally CDC assists state and local d
epartments of education in evaluating the quality and effectiveness of
their HIV-related policies, educator training, and curricula. Finally
, CDC conducts evaluation research on state-of-the-art, multi-componen
t, school-based interventions to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Cop
