A history of the development of standards for personnel preparation at
the graduate level is presented. The roles played by tile Professiona
l Training Institutes, the Professional Development Division of the Na
tional Association for Gifted Children, and the Presidential Task Forc
e on personnel preparation and standards are reviewed. The symposia to
develop professional standards for graduate programs in gifted educat
ion are described as is their relationship to the standards of the Nat
ional Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
