We present a model of multiunit auctions in which some of the units ma
y be sold before the auction (i.e., ''noncompetitively'') at a price t
o be established by the auction. All potential buyers have similar inf
ormation and costs. But, at equilibrium, some buy noncompetitively whi
le the remainder bid in the auction, and the seller benefits from allo
wing noncompetitive sales. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
