Abstract
Image processing in telecommunications has, so far, concentrated on co mpression to allow still or moving picture transmission over narrow-ba ndwidth circuits. With the provision of high-bit-rate channels, this n eed will diminish though not disappear Instead, as the electronic tran sfer of pictorial information becomes commonplace, there will be a dem and for 'intelligent' image processing, which is responsive to the con tent.
