PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3-PbSc1/2Nb1/2O3-PbTiO3 solid solutions were studied alon
g the (1 - u)(0.91PbZn(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) + 0.09PbTiO(3)) + u(0.58PbSc(1/
2)Nb(1/2)O(3) + 0.42PbTiO(3)) and 45 mol % PbZn(1/3)Nb2/3O(3) sections
. The PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3-rich samples contained a considerable amount of a
nonferroelectric pyrochlore phase. At large u, only a perovskite phas
e formed. Initially, the piezoelectric properties improved sharply wit
h increasing u (decreasing content of the pyrochlore phase). Upon furt
her increase in u, the properties leveled off, approaching values of p
ractical significance. The morphotropic phase boundary was found to de
flect toward low PbTiO3 contents.
