An overview is presented of the more common, and some of the most rece
ntly described, nicotine receptor ligands, and agents employed in nico
tine-receptor research. The presentation was meant to set the stage fo
r further discussion of these agents. The focus of the overview is (i)
to identify which agents bind at nicotine receptors and which do not,
(ii) to provide the chemical structures of various nicotine receptor
ligands and, where possible, (iii) to describe the results of structur
e-activity studies.
