Ca. Mateer et al., MANAGEMENT OF ATTENTION AND MEMORY DISORDERS FOLLOWING TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, Journal of learning disabilities, 29(6), 1996, pp. 618-632
Disorders of attention, memory, and executive function are common sequ
elae in children who have sustained traumatic brain injuries. Given th
e persistent nature of these deficits, there is a need for efficacious
remedial approaches. Typically, remediation is approached through one
of three general intervention strategies: externally focused interven
tions aimed at changing the environment so that the effect of the dysf
unction is minimized, internally focused interventions aimed at improv
ing the underlying cognitive ability, and compensatory interventions a
imed at teaching children to use alternate strategies that lessen the
impact of the dysfunction. This article describes current research inv
olving these approaches for the treatment of attention and memory diso
rders in children.
