Abstract
The introduction of analogue cellular radio telephone 10 years ago res ulted in a rate of expansion of users that far exceeded market expecta tions. During this period, the European digital Global System for Mobi le Communications (GSM) standard has been developed. Initially introdu ced only 2 years ago, the take-up has been exceptional. The GSM standa rd, that many believed would fail because of its complexity, is alread y proving to be one of Europe's most successful standards.
