The introduction of analogue cellular radio telephone 10 years ago res
ulted in a rate of expansion of users that far exceeded market expecta
tions. During this period, the European digital Global System for Mobi
le Communications (GSM) standard has been developed. Initially introdu
ced only 2 years ago, the take-up has been exceptional. The GSM standa
rd, that many believed would fail because of its complexity, is alread
y proving to be one of Europe's most successful standards.
