Abstract
The welfare of animals during handling and transport can be assessed u sing a wide variety of measures which are described. These measures pr ovide information about how much difficulty the animal has when trying to cope with the transport environment and about the extent to which an individual animal fails to cope. Management and housing prior to tr ansport can have a considerable effect on welfare during transport. Th e effects of management and vehicle conditions on animals are describe d. The importance of proper training for staff involved in animal tran sport is emphasised and other conclusions are listed.
