This paper presents a community-based model for undergraduate educatio
n, which employs the concept of the citizen-scholar. Citizen-scholars
integrate their academic activities of teaching, research, and service
into a coordinated whole. This model was developed at the University
of Dayton in 1991. We discuss the history of model development and how
it has been implemented over the last three years, including the ways
in which this model has affected our teaching, research, and service
activities.
