Synthetic apatites were precipitated in the presence of magnesium and
carbonate, at room temperature, and their maturation followed. A cryst
allinity index for each sample was calculated from Fourier transform i
nfrared (FTIR) spectra. It is shown that there is a synergetic effect
between carbonate and magnesium in delaying the increase of the crysta
llinity index with maturation. Deconvoluted FTIR spectra of these apat
ites confirmed the presence of an extra band at 620 cm(-1). Its evolut
ion is shown and its assignment discussed on the basis of comparison w
ith deuterated samples.
