A comparison of two methods of determination of furanic aldehydes in c
ommercial brandies was carried out. The brandy samples were analysed u
sing the spectrophotometric technique recommended by the Spanish Minis
try of Health and Consumption, and by another HPLC technique. The resu
lts were subjected to appropriate statistical treatment and both techn
iques were found to be suitable, as there were no significant statisti
cal differences between them, although the chromatographic technique i
s somewhat faster and easier to use than the spectrophotometric method
