The Ferry Preschool was a small experiment that delivered high-quality
preschool education to 58 at-risk children and involved their parents
in the educational process. Head Start is a national intervention pro
gram that provides comprehensive services to children and families in
poverty. A comparison of the programs' like and unlike features shows
that both have relative strengths and weaknesses. The Ferry Preschool
is closed, but Head Start continues to evolve and can implement the kn
owledge that has accrued in the field of early childhood intervention.
