Jj. Martocchio et Ta. Judge, WHEN WE DONT SEE EYE-TO-EYE - DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN SUPERVISORS AND SUBORDINATES IN ABSENCE DISCIPLINARY DECISIONS, Journal of management, 21(2), 1995, pp. 251-278
The present study provided a within-subjects assessment of the factors
associated with absence disciplinary decisions for both supervisors a
nd subordinates. In addition, this study examined discrepancies in dis
ciplinary decisions between supervisors and their subordinates based o
n differences in psychological and demographic attributes. A sample of
non-academic employees from 19 intact triads (one supervisor; two sub
ordinates) at a large Midwest university responded to hypothetical sce
narios describing factors that might contribute to absence disciplinar
y decisions. The results demonstrated that both supervisors and subord
inates generally place similar weights on factors that are relevant to
disciplinary decisions. Perhaps move importantly, a number of psychol
ogical and demographic differences between supervisors and subordinate
s related positively to discrepancies in disciplinary decisions.
