The authors hypothesized that there is a tendency to neglect fundament
al job requirements such as those related to attendance, substance abu
se, theft, safety, and violence when evaluating job applicants. Based
on a survey of professional secretaries (n = 52), fundamental requirem
ents that were considered just as important as task-focused requiremen
ts (e.g., grammatical skills, typing skills, spelling ability) were le
ss likely to be assessed using either non-scientific or scientific sel
ection procedures.
