Based on a sample of 601 published grievance arbitration awards, this
study revealed that commonly identified arbitrator and case characteri
stics, such as gender of the arbitrator and gender of the grievant, di
d not make a statistically significant difference with regard to the u
ltimate outcome, or award. The only exception was the issue on the mer
its, with discipline/discharge cases marked by a significantly higher
proportion of compromise awards and with contract interpretation cases
marked by a significantly higher proportion of grievances upheld.
