Abstract
This article presents a short overview of current trends in research o n reading and spelling. First, specific conceptual and methodological shortcomings of research on dyslexia are briefly discussed. Next, curr ent developmental models of reading and spelling are introduced. Final ly, the importance of longitudinal studies influenced by those models and focusing on the role of metalinguistic abilities in the acquisitio n of reading and spelling skills is highlighted.
