The assessment of change is a major methodological concern in developm
ental and educational psychology. In this article, we underline the ad
vantages of Hierarchical Linear Models for the adequate statistical mo
delling of change. The benefits of this method are exemplified with re
spect to memory research, especially in its developmental orientation.
Besides the discussion of theoretical issues, the applications of Hie
rarchical Linear Modelling and traditional ANOVA analyses are compared
using a data set from an expert-novice study on short-term knowledge
acquisition in the domain of chess.
