Rd. Vanderweijden et al., THE INFLUENCE OF TOTAL CALCIUM AND TOTAL CARBONATE ON THE GROWTH-RATEOF CALCITE, Journal of crystal growth, 171(1-2), 1997, pp. 190-196
The influence of total calcium and total carbonate on the growth rate
of calcite under seawater-like conditions was studied with a chemostat
system. The growth rate increased with increasing calcium concentrati
on, due to a higher supersaturation. At equal supersaturation and simi
lar free activities of calcium and carbonate, the growth rate increase
d at a higher total carbonate concentration. This increase can be expl
ained by a contribution of bicarbonate to calcite crystal growth.
