Stabilized zirconia is a good oxygen ion conductor and a bad electron
conductor at temperatures between approx. 450 degrees C and 950 degree
s C. Moreover it has an excellent chemical stability. These properties
make it a material very well suited for the application as active ele
ment in gassensors for use in harsh environmental conditions, like at
high temperatures and aggressive atmosheres. The paper describes the a
pplication of doped zirconia in potentiometric and amperometric sensor
s. Oxygen sensors for application in combustion engine control, combus
tion control and oxygen measurement in liquid steel will be described
together with a new sensor for the detection of combustible gases and
its application in combustion control.
