Abstract
Meta-analysis and other studies show that multimedia has enormous pote ntials to enhance and facilitate learning. Most of the recent multimed ia systems, however, show only small positive effects on learning or n one at all. Learning with multimedia is influenced by many internal an d external factors: Knowledge, learning strategies and motivation, mod e and contents of media and their combination, application to the curr iculum, and the conditions of studying. The design of the study has a strong impact of the data observed: Mode and amount of data representi ng acceptance and performance, amount and subject of the study materia ls, and time, contents, and extent of the knowledge diagnosis. Therefo re, no simple criteria can guide the effective application of multimed ia.
