Abstract
The methods used to extract the momentum dependence of the energy loss near edge structure are compared. The improved counting statistics of the 45 degrees method relative to the axial method for equivalent mom entum resolution are noted. The experimental conditions required for t he successful application of the method are also investigated and, exa mining Cu L edge data for YBa2Cu3O7-delta as obtained in a number of d ifferent manners, it is concluded that it is essential to modify the e xact orientation for the 45 degrees method so as to minimise the effec ts of elastic scattering.
