This study is based on data collected from faculty of a comprehensive
university located in the rural Southwest regarding their view of coll
ective bargaining in institutions of higher learning. Five major issue
s identified in literature as significant determinants of faculty perc
eptions: personnel, compensation, governance, union image, and work en
vironment are examined. The result confirms the importance of personne
l, governance and compensation as significant determinants. Interestin
gly this study points to work environment, faculty satisfaction, and r
elationship with superiors as even more important in coloring faculty
attitude toward collective bargaining.
