The focus of this article is to compare collective bargaining agreemen
t tenure award requirements with the tenure award guidelines of the Am
erican Association of University Professors (AAUP). Most criticism of
tenure practices are based on the interpretations of the AAUP's 1940 S
tatement of Academic : Freedom and Tenure. An examination of literatur
e in the higher education tenure arena finds a divergence of standards
regarding the award of tenure. This article compares eleven collectiv
e bargaining agreements to ten guidelines proposed by the AAUP with an
additional variable, reference to AAUP standards, being included beca
use of allusion by AAUP that many institutions reference their policie
s without actually adhering to them. Results of the survey show a plur
ality of such agreements use four of die guidelines, with a simple maj
ority of institutions utilizing at least six.
