This essay argues that sociology students as well as sociologists shou
ld actively participate in the current debate on issues of cultural pl
uralism, and that we can encourage this participation by providing stu
dents with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to bring a distinc
tively sociological perspective to the debate. A classroom-based resea
rch project on international students' experiences is presented as an
example of this approach. The classroom procedures used to structure t
he students' research are described, and the effects of the research o
n students' thinking about issues of cultural pluralism are discussed.
