Cross-cultural international management research is complex, costly, a
nd frequently, nonrigorous. This idiographic study documents the evolu
tion of a multinational, multicultural, interdisciplinary research con
sortium that sought to remedy this lack of rigor in a project investig
ating international human resource management practices. We identify k
ey learning points derived from this project and conclude with the rud
iments of a midrange theory of a comparative management research metho
dology.
