Using data from 43 of the largest (student population) urban School di
stricts in the nation, the article examines the progress women have ma
de in securing line administrative positions in urban school districts
in 20 years since the passage of Title IX. The study showed that wome
n had made statistically significant progress in moving into such posi
tions and had increased their numbers and percentages in all positions
in the years 1972-1982 and 1982-1992. Indeed, women were found to be
closing in on 50% of such positions.
