In this paper we present information on the Remote Area Teacher Educat
ion Programme (RATEP) project undertaken in Aboriginal and Torres Stra
it Islander Communities in Far North Queensland, Australia. The possib
ilities for information technology in the delivery of an on-site teach
er-education programme in remote communities are described. We argue t
hat the RATEP project demonstrates the potential of IT as an instrumen
t for teaching and learning. To develop our argument we focus on three
issues: interactive learning systems, pedagogy and the features of IT
and RATEP pedagogy. We conclude that students have quickly become 'te
chnologically literate' and have appeared to benefit from the opportun
ities to exercise some autonomy over sequence, rate and mode of access
to information.
